Breaking: Trump’s travel ban on Nigeria, others callous – US Speaker

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has described as callous, President Trump’s addition of Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Tanzania and Sudan to the travel ban.

Nancy, a ‘Democrats’, focused on strengthening America’s middle class and creating jobs; said that the travel ban will threaten the US security, values and rule of law.

She assured of establishing ‘NO BAN Act’ that will prohibit religious discrimination of America’s immigration system and limit Trump’s ability to impose what she described as ‘biased and bigoted restrictions.’

Her words, “The Trump Administration’s expansion of its outrageous, un-American travel ban threatens our security, our values and the rule of law.

The sweeping rule, barring more than 350 million individuals from predominantly African nations from traveling to the United States, is discrimination disguised as policy.

“America’s strength has always been as a beacon of hope and opportunity for people around the world, whose dreams and aspirations have enriched our nation and made America more American.

With this latest callous decision, the President has doubled down on his cruelty and further undermined our global leadership, our Constitution and our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants.

“In the Congress and in the Courts, House Democrats will continue to oppose the Administration’s dangerous anti-immigrant agenda.

In the coming weeks, the House Judiciary Committee will mark-up and bring to the Floor the NO BAN Act to prohibit religious discrimination in our immigration system and limit the President’s ability to impose such biased and bigoted restrictions.

We will never allow hatred or bigotry to define our nation or destroy our values.” (Vanguard)

US bans immigration from Nigeria, five other countries

United States President, Donald Trump, on Friday slapped immigration restrictions on citizens of six countries including Nigeria, in addition to the list of nations already targeted by his controversial travel ban.

Besides Africa’s most populous nation, the new measures also pertain to Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Sudan and Tanzania, administration officials said.

“The president’s decision is the product of a comprehensive and systematic assessment that was conducted by the Department of Homeland Security, as well as in partnership with other federal agencies,” said one of the officials.

The official added that the decision was the “result of these countries’ unwillingness or inability to adhere to certain baseline identity management, information sharing and national security and public safety assessment criteria that were established by the department in 2017.”

Unlike the travel ban Trump unveiled in January 2017 shortly after taking office, which banned citizens of certain Muslim-majority countries from entering US territory, the latest directive, which takes effect February 22, was less sweeping.

The official said it would only target certain visa categories and would focus primarily on people seeking to move to the United States rather than those simply aiming to visit.

– ‘Have to be safe’ –

Trump had announced his intention to lengthen the list of countries last week on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“We have to be safe. Our country has to be safe,” he said.

Trump repeatedly promised during his election campaign to implement a complete ban on Muslims entering the US, and he announced his first package of travel bans and restrictions shortly after taking office in January 2017.

The move outraged critics and was struck down by a federal court that ruled the ban amounted to religious discrimination.

The administration moved a second version of the policy in March 2017, which was struck down again for similar reasons.

The sentiment was echoed by Democratic lawmakers as well, such as House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson who said that the measure was consistent with Trump’s “thoughts on immigration from countries with predominately black and brown populations.”

“The fact that he has couched this political decision in the homeland or national security terms is grotesque,” Thompson added.

Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs is expected in Washington Monday for strategic dialogue with the United States.

In recent weeks, Trump’s administration has shown clear support for the transitional government in fast-changing Sudan and is negotiating Khartoum’s removal from a list of countries the US deems backers of terrorism. (Vanguard)

Djokovic romps past Ito into Australian Open round three

Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic weathered a testing second set and breezy conditions to crush Japanese wildcard Tatsuma Ito and reach the Australian Open third round on Wednesday.

The Serbian star gave up just seven games against the world number 146 in the 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 romp on Rod Laver Arena which lasted 95 minutes.

“Credit to him for fighting till the end, the second set was pretty close,” said the reigning title-holder.

“They were tough conditions, pretty windy and it was hard to know where the balls were going. My serve helped a lot to get me out of trouble.”

His reward is a clash against another Japanese, Yoshihito Nishioka, who beat Britain’s Dan Evans in three sets.

It was Djokovic’s 70th match win at Melbourne Park to only eight defeats, but one of those defeats was against a wildcard — Denis Istomin — in the second round three years ago.

With that in mind, he came out with all guns blazing, racing through the first set in just 22 minutes.

The 32-year-old dropped a set in a tough opening clash on Monday against German Jan-Lennard Struff, and against the odds Ito pressed hard to level the match in the second set.

The experienced Japanese, bidding to reach a Grand Slam third round for the first time, cut down on his error rate to push Djokovic around the court and get into the rallies.

But the Serb inevitably got the break he was chasing in game nine when Ito fluffed a forehand and he quickly served it out, blasting down an ace to go two sets ahead. (Punch)
