Amaka Igwe: Google Doodle honours Nigerian filmmaker on 57th posthumous birthday

Late veteran Nollywood filmmaker, Amaka Igwe, has been honoured with a Google Doodle on her 57th posthumous birthday.

A Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google’s homepages intended to commemorate holidays, events, achievements and notable historical figures. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the doodle went live on Thursday as an honour of late Igwe’s contributions to Nollywood.

She was a Nigerian filmmaker and broadcasting executive. Igwe was the owner of Top Radio 90.9 Lagos and Amaka Igwe Studios.

She was recognised as one of the second-generation filmmakers who helped begin the video film era of Nigerian cinema. She remained a prominent figure in the industry until her death in 2014.

Igwe hit national limelight as the writer and producer of award-winning TV soap ‘Checkmate’ and its offshoot ‘Fuji House of Commotion’. Her Nollywood projects include ‘Rattle snake’ and ‘Violated’, which set Amaka Igwe Studios apart in the Video film era of Nigerian cinema. (Vanguard)

Microsoft targets North Korean hackers for stealing ‘sensitive’ information

Microsoft has disabled dozens of websites that North Korean hackers used to steal personal information from Americans and others, the tech giant said.

A federal court order allowed Microsoft to take control of 50 domains that a hacker group known as “Thallium” used to launch cyberattacks on government workers, university staff, think tanks and other targets, the company said.

The group, which is believed to operate in North Korea, used a network of websites, computers and domains “to target victims and then compromise their online accounts, infect their computers, compromise the security of their networks and steal sensitive information,” Microsoft said in a Monday blog post.

The company did not disclose how many people Thallium targeted, but it said the group used a tactic called “spear phishing” to snatch personal information from targets in the US, Japan and South Korea.

The hackers used publicly available information to identify targets whom they sent authentic-looking emails leading to a website that asked for the users’ account information, according to Microsoft.

The hackers could view the targets’ email messages, contacts and calendar appointments once they got the credentials, the company said. They also often set up victims’ accounts to forward new emails to Thallium accounts, giving hackers access to the targets’ messages even after they changed their passwords, Microsoft said.

Thallium also uses malware programs — with names such as “BabyShark” and “KimJongRAT” — to steal data from computers and compromise systems, according to the company.

Microsoft said Thallium is the fourth foreign hacking group that it has battled with legal action.

The company has also gone after groups operating from Russia, China and Iran, according to the blog post. (Vanguard)

Rooney makes winning debut with Derby

Wayne Rooney enjoyed a winning debut with Derby as the former Manchester United star helped his Championship side to a 2-1 win against Barnsley on Thursday. Rooney was named Derby captain for his first appearance since agreeing to join the second-tier club back in August.

United and England’s record goalscorer had been training, coaching and sitting in the dugout at Derby matches for several weeks, but Thursday was the first time he had been eligible to play following his departure from Major League Soccer side DC United.

The 34-year-old, included at the expense of the suspended Krystian Bielik in the only change made by Derby boss Phillip Cocu, played the full match, despite it being his first competitive game since October.

He set up the opening goal for Jack Marriott and was involved in Derby’s second goal, providing a pin-point diagonal pass to Andre Wisdom, whose low cross was turned home by Martyn Waghorn.

Elliot Simoes had equalised for Barnsley, but struggling visitors couldn’t ruin Rooney’s return to English football.

Rooney’s debut coincided with Cocu’s team winning successive matches for the first time this season, but they remain 17th in the table.

Charlton began their new era under fresh ownership with a 1-0 defeat at Swansea. Yan Dhanda’s first-half strike was enough to propel the Swans into the play-off places.

Charlton kicked off a new chapter under the ownership of East Street Investments after their takeover from former owner Roland Duchatelet was confirmed by the EFL four hours before the Liberty Stadium clash.

But the injury-ravaged south Londoners are a mere five points clear of the bottom three after a miserable run of just one win in 14 matches. (Vanguard)

Pope Francis apologies for hitting devotee

Pope Francis apologised Wednesday for his widely-viewed slap of a woman who had grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year’s Eve.

The image of Francis slapping his way free from the clutches of the admirer was an instant hit on social media.

A personal apology followed.

“We lose patience many times,” Francis confessed.

“It happens to me too. I apologise for the bad example given yesterday,” the head of the Catholic church said before celebrating Mass at the Vatican.

Twitter enthusiasts commented with abandon on the pontiff’s prompt riposte to the woman.

Francis had greeted children before the Nativity scene on Saint Peter’s square and was turning away when the woman who had crossed herself then cried out something, pulled on his hand and almost caused him to fall.

The 83-year-old pope grimaced before managing to break free by slapping her hand twice.

He continued his tour, walking with some difficulty while maintaining a slightly greater distance from visitors, and gradually relaxed again as he came into contact with other children. (Punch)
