‘How bathing in warm water boosts your health’

We all can relate. The pressures of daily life provide a natural incentive to pace ourselves, and a warm shower or bath could act as a basic boost or relaxant, depending on the time of day.

However, research continues to prove warm water has significant benefits beyond a feel-good factor, with some studies placing its health advantages on par with physical exercise.

Here are a few reasons why choosing warm water shouldn’t only be a matter of personal preference. Kick-starts your day, decreases stress. Heat from the water stimulates the heart to work harder and faster, thereby accelerating blood flow around the body. It’s also been proven to enhance oxytocin levels, which in turn elevates the mood and lowers stress.

According to Neil Morris, a psychologist at the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom, bathing in warm water can significantly advance general psychological wellness. Morris studied 80 people who took a bath with warm water each day for a fortnight and found that it diminished feelings of depression and pessimism while developing a pleasurable, hedonic tone.

A warm shower before bedtime typically soothes the body, mind and nerves. Apart from that, warm water also affects the body’s production of melatonin – the hormone that regulates sleep.

At night, the body’s core temperature naturally falls, triggering melatonin production. A warm shower or bath around bedtime then slightly raises the body temperature, causing it to drop steeply on exiting the bathroom.

This prompts a heightened production of melatonin, and more likelihood of a good night’s sleep – the benefits of which are widely recognized. Lowers blood pressure and promotes muscle healing.

Taking a regular warm bath – with its circulation and vascular function advantages – can help reduce blood pressure and stiffen blood vessels. The effect of heat-induced blood flow on the body is tantamount to a light exercise session. The warmth encourages muscles to expand and contract while loosening joints, tendons and tissues.

Although not an enduring cure for pain, five minutes under warm water can considerably ease pain, spur healing and restrict inflammation. It’s a more convenient alternative than a massage and more organic than medical treatments.

Eliminates bacteria. The elementary reason for having a bath is to cleanse ourselves. Clogged pores lead to blemishes and an accumulation of toxins in the skin.

Warm water opens up skin pores, making it easier to clean out dirt and impurities. The temperature increase also has an adverse effect on most bacteria. Taking these baths or showers is particularly useful if there’s a wound, as it helps kill bacteria, fend off infection, and promote circulation in the injured area for faster healing.

Relieves cough and cold symptoms. Nasal congestion is as a result of inflammation in the nasal passages.

Inhaling steam from warm water activates the blood vessels in the face and nose, consequently opening up the airways, as well as loosening phlegm and mucus blockages that could be causing a cough or sore throat.

A warm bath also empowers the immune system to better fight viruses. This list isn’t exhaustive – warm water’s various health merits range from weight loss to controlling diabetes. As it also has a number of physical wellness benefits, warm water bathing should not be reserved exclusively for cold weather. W

arm water is proven to naturally enhance the body and facilitate a sense of calm all year round.

So the next time you contemplate a warm bath, think past the pleasant experience itself to its long-term value. Your body will thank you for it. Issued in public interest by Ariston Thermo Nigeria Gaurav Bisaria, Director for Central Africa. Vanguard

Bill Cosby’s spokesman calls Eddie Murphy a ‘Hollywood slave’ after SNL appearance

A spokesman for Bill Cosby has fired back at Eddie Murphy after the comedian made jokes at Cosby’s expense during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live.

Murphy compared his current situation to Cosby’s, who’s serving three to 10 years in prison after being found guilty in April 2018 on three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his home in 2004. Earlier this month, a Pennsylvania appeals court upheld the conviction.

“But if you would have told me 30 years ago that I would be this boring, stay-at-home … house dad and Bill Cosby would be in jail,” Murphy said to laughter, “even I would have taken that bet.”

“Who is America’s Dad now?” Murphy added, impersonating Cosby’s Cliff Huxtable, the sitcom character who was once often referred to as America’s Dad. In a statement released Sunday, Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt criticized Murphy for the jokes, saying it was Cosby who “broke color barriers in the Entertainment Industry” so that Murphy and other comedians like Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart could perform, as reported by CNN.

Murphy’s jokes were “disparaging,” the statement said, adding, “One would think that Mr. Murphy was given his freedom to leave the plantation so that he could make his own decisions, but he decided to sell himself back to being a Hollywood Slave.” Wyatt’s statement then appeared to accuse Murphy of perpetuating racial stereotypes by saying he was “cooning” and comparing him to Stepin Fetchit, the stage name of actor Lincoln Perry, who embodied racist cliches.

“Remember, Mr. Murphy, that Bill Cosby became legendary because he used comedy to humanize all races, religions, and genders; but your attacking Mr. Cosby helps you embark on just becoming clickbait,” Wyatt’s statement said. “Hopefully, you will be amenable to having a meeting of the mind’s conversation,” the statement said, “in order to discuss how we can use our collective platforms to enhance Black people rather than bringing all of us down together.” Vanguard

‘Too expensive’ ― Klopp reveals why Liverpool have no French players

There are not any France players in Liverpool’s senior squad because most of them are too expensive, according to their coach Jurgen Klopp. The European champions have not had a French international on their books since 2017, despite Les Bleus winning the 2018 World Cup and being dominant on the world stage in recent times.

With the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba all involved in club moves or rumoured transfers over the past few seasons, Klopp revealed this calibre of French player costs too much for Liverpool to buy. When asked why there was no France stars in his team, Klopp told Canal+: “There is no reason for it.

“Kylian plays for PSG. Griezmann wanted to go to Barcelona obviously – we know how good that team is. “We would like to have a French player, but some of them are too expensive for us.”

Mamadou Sakho was the last France international to pull on the famous red shirt, signing from PSG in 2013 and staying four seasons before departing for Crystal Palace. Other notable French players on Liverpool’s books in the 21st century include Nicolas Anelka, Djibril Cisse, David N’Gog and Aly Cissokho.

The Reds do have a France talent in their under 23’s, with 18-year-old left-back Yasser Larouci playing in non-competitive matches for Liverpool’s first team during pre-season.

Klopp’s side has streaked to a 10-point lead over Leicester City at the top of the Premier League, while also holding a game in hand on Brendan Rodgers’ team, who they face at Anfield on the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day.

Last year’s champions Manchester City are a further point back in third position and have struggled to maintain momentum this season after injuries to key stars such as Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, and Leroy Sane.

Liverpool, fresh from winning the Club World Cup against Flamengo in Qatar, have home clashes against Wolves and Sheffield United over the new-year period, before meeting city rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round on January 5. They will then take on Tottenham, Manchester United and Wolves in a tough stretch of league fixtures through January. Vanguard

FDA approves first-ever vaccine for prevention of Ebola virus

The vaccine, Ervebo, was developed by Merck and protects against Ebola virus disease (EVD) caused by Zaire ebolavirus in people 18 and older, the FDA said in a statement.

Cases of EVD in the US are very rare and have generally occurred when people already infected with the virus have traveled into the country or when health care workers have become infected treating those sickened by EVD.

“While the risk of Ebola virus disease in the U.S. remains low, the U.S. government remains deeply committed to fighting devastating Ebola outbreaks in Africa, including the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” Anna Abram, FDA Deputy Commissioner for Policy, Legislation, and International Affairs, said in a press release.

Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, called the new vaccine “a triumph of American global health leadership.”
The Zaire strain of the Ebola virus has caused more than 2,000 deaths in the current outbreak in the eastern DRC, and more than 11,000 deaths during an outbreak in 2014 in West Africa.

De Gea mistake just one of those things, says Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dismissed David de Gea’s mistake against Watford as “one of those things” after his side suffered a 2-0 defeat on Sunday.

Watford scored twice in the early stages of the second half to seal the three points against the Red Devils.

De Gea was held responsible for Watford’s first goal as Ismaila Sarr’s shot bounced past him and into the top corner before Troy Deeney converted a penalty.

The loss is United’s first in seven matches in all competitions and leaves them eighth in the Premier League, drifting further behind their rivals for a top-four finish.

Despite the costly setback, Solskjaer praised De Gea’s effort for United and says he still has confidence in him.

“It’s one of those things,” he told BBC Sport. “He’s been so good in training and focused.

“One goal is a mistake and the second is penalty.

David’s been very confident lately and I don’t look at it any other way.”

He continued to Sky Sports: “It was a mistake. It happens in football and it is what we train for every day to make sure they don’t happen again
“David has been very good lately, it is just one of those things that happen.

“You have to earn every point on the pitch and today we didn’t deserve that. I can talk about it all day long.

We have to face the fact we have two games coming up that we have to improve on.”

United attacker Jesse Lingard missed United’s biggest opportunity in the first half when he went through on goal but tried to chip it over Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster and missed the target.

Although the coach feels the attacker made the wrong decision, he held off criticising him.

“Ben Foster stood up so I don’t think a chip was the right option,” he added. “It was a good run, we could have been 1-0 up but it happens.

“Sometimes you miss the target and sometimes you score. “We need a reaction.”

United are in action again on Boxing Day, when they host Newcastle at Old Trafford before they visit Burnley two days later in their last game of 2019. Vanguard
